【煽峰点火】第15期：碎南瓜—放下吉他

坦白地讲，我不太喜欢“碎南瓜”（Smashing Pumpkins），对他们前几张专辑也是有一搭无一搭地听，但对这张新专辑《爱慕》（Adore），却没有少听。大概是前段时间世界杯的缘故，在深夜两场比赛的间隔总得找点东西打发时间，于是就听“碎南瓜”这张新专辑，没想到竟改变了对他们的看法，当然，很大一部分原因是他们改变了音乐，尤其是，这张唱片确实适合在夜阑人静的时候去听。
也许用“改头换面”一词来形容这张唱片更加合适，“碎南瓜”将来也许会解散，因为这张专辑是比利•科根（Billy Corgan）最个人化的一次体现，听说早些时候科根在个人演出时只用一把木吉他，后来又听说他对电子乐着迷，一切都在这张专辑中得到了验证。
这是一张需要用野心、勇气和冒险来完成的专辑。因为这次他们放弃制胜的武器──吉他，代之以鼓机、采样、合成器并时而点缀一些噪音。没有变的是科根诗意的歌词和迷人的旋律。在歌词中，总离不开爱、失落、信仰等主题，而且总是把这些常见的主题写得很美。再配以动听的旋律，如果你静静地聆听，确实难以忘怀。因为没有了噪音和吵闹，只有缓缓的旋律在流淌，在夜深时听，即便放大一点音量也不至于吵醒隔壁的婴儿，相信他总是伴着摇篮曲般的歌声进入梦乡。

《给希拉》（To Sheila）是专辑中惟一一首原声作品，是科根的一次祷告和忏悔，钢琴时隐时现，偶尔可听到几声曼陀林，所以几乎是科根清唱出来的，但旋律似乎像雾一样飘到空旷的原野，挥之不去。

而接下来的《火热的爱慕》（Ava Adore），则是不折不扣的电子Techno，也就是从这一首歌开始，我们要感受在鼓机音色下科根凄美的嗓音，《达芙妮来了》（Daphne Descends）、《眼泪》（Tear）、《丧气》（Crestfallen）把这种凄美发挥到了极至。这也难怪为什么《滚石》杂志说这张专辑中科根显得有些闷闷不乐了。

不知是否有意安排，专辑后半部分听上去更像是民谣、摇篮曲，简单的鼓机和音色的点缀，《羞愧》（Shame）是一首佳作，简洁而富有哲理的歌词与简洁的音乐便配让你自然联想到，如果改用木吉他，这又是“飞鸟”（the Byrds）再生。

《看，噩梦》（Behold! The Night Mare）、“For Martha”、《空白页》（Blank Page）都是以钢琴为主线，都是可圈可点的民谣，只是在高潮部分加入一些电子效果，但也是点睛之笔。

不知何故，封套里竟没有出现达西•雷茨基（D'Arcy Wretzky）和詹姆斯•伊哈（James Iha）的名字，经过一番查找，才知此二人在这张专辑里只与科根合作了“Ava Adore”、《从前》（Once Upon a Time）和“Daphne Descends”3首歌，这一结果似乎在暗示人们，科根自己也能完成一张唱片。这也不难理解詹姆斯•伊哈为什么匆匆地出了一张个人专辑了。
尽管“碎南瓜”（抑或说是比利•科根）选择了电子乐方向，但也仅仅是为了放弃过去的风格进行一次浅显的尝试，音乐中没有复杂的采样、花哨的音色。但放弃成功方式而选择陌生方向是一种无奈的选择还是追求创新？不论将来决定命运的市场数字会怎样，至少，比利•科根为我们带来了难以忘却的旋律和他弥漫阴霾情绪中的凄美之声。
